FRAGMENTS OF IDENTITY

TERENCE L. SMITH - NEW COLLECTION

Portraits Beyond the Familiar

Fragments of Identity is a series of contemporary portrait studies that explores identity as something layered, evolving, and impossible to define by appearance alone. Drawing inspiration from Cubism, African aesthetics, modern abstraction, and symbolic portraiture, each work deconstructs the human face and form into geometric planes, fluid contours, rhythmic patterns, and vibrant color relationships.

Across the collection, the figures exist somewhere between abstraction and recognition. Faces emerge from intersecting shapes. Profiles dissolve into pattern. Eyes become focal points. Hair, clothing, and background elements merge into visual environments that suggest memory, resilience, culture, and transformation.

The works intentionally balance opposing forces—organic and angular, symmetrical and asymmetrical, realistic and abstract. These contrasts reflect the complexity of identity itself: the tension between who we are, how we see ourselves, and how the world sees us.

Each portrait represents a fragment of a larger human story—individual yet connected, personal yet universal.

THE QUESTION BEHIND THE COLLECTION

Who are we beneath the identities we wear?

Identity is shaped by what we inherit, what we experience, what we reveal and what we conceal. Fragments of Identity explores the layers between the person we present to the world and the person who exists beneath the surface.

What remains when those layers are stripped away?
